Play as a diatomist, collecting and arranging luminous and iridescent diatoms through a microscope. Diatomic Number is a 2D game that uses the Oculus Rift to display "impossible colors," which exist outside of the commonly known color space.

The Oculus Rift is generally always used to simulate 3D virtual reality experiences - so why make a 2D game for the Oculus Rift? To make use of what is known as “impossible colors.” “Impossible colors” exist outside of the commonly known color space. Normally, when mixing red and green paint, the result would be a dull brown with low saturation and luminosity. An example of an impossible color is red-green: an optical mixture that exhibits qualities of both bright red and bright green simultaneously, a vibrating color with high saturation and luminosity. Divisionists (best known for Pointillism) created paintings that demonstrated optical color mixing by placing individual dots of colors next to one another. Some Divisionists believed they were achieving the maximum luminosity scientifically possible. However, they haven’t been quite able to achieve impossible colors, which we are able to exhibit, thanks to the Oculus Rift. Diatoms, luminous and iridescent in nature, are a perfect subject matter for impossible colors. Diatomists, meticulously collecting and arranging tiny diatoms through their Victorian era microscopes, inspired us to use the Oculus Rift to display impossible colors.

  • Collect and arrange diatoms, like a Victorian-era diatomist with a microscope!
  • Use the Oculus Rift to see impossible colors, which exist outside of the commonly known color space.
  • Get stimulated by a soundtrack featuring binaural beats.
